GUAP: Or, The Problem of Money
A series for web by Chris Myers
Troy is a second rate drug dealer looking to get out of what seems like a lifelong rut of being penniless and rudderless. Being a native New Yorker prepared him for a lot of things, but when a neighborhood homeless man and rich adolescent private school kid become his partners in “crime", he quickly realizes there's no roadmap for what comes next. “GUAP,” slang for a lot of cash, is a serio-comic examination of money and the many influences it has over our lives, set in the city most ruled by its presence. It’s about getting ahead and finding something real, despite the fact that the world is built on who stacks, wins.
Troy (Male, Black or Hispanic, Mid 20's-mid 30’s): A lovable fuck up, native New Yorker to the bone, and crafty yet past his prime drug dealer. He's just trying to do right - by himself, by his family, by his neighborhood. He's also flat broke, so he’s not doing much of anything. Weary of anything resembling an establishment, Troy marches to the beat of his own drummer and takes point from a moral compass of his own design. But as he begins to realize his life is going no where fast, Troy allows himself to entertain the idea that he might have to start thinking outside the box if anything is going to change. LEAD, RECURRING.
Eric (Male, White, 15): Super young looking kid with a surprisingly keen mind. At first glance he's a standard fare privileged private schooler, but what sets Eric aside - besides his advanced intelligence and wit - is his compassion and respect for those who have a true hustle. After all, for all his trying, it’s something he genuinely wants for himself. That doesn't mean he's not hopelessly corny with a lot to learn. LEAD, RECURRING.
Homeless Man (Male, Black or Hispanic, mid 30's-mid 40’s): Initially one of the thousands of nameless souls that call the New York streets home, he eventually reveals himself to be quite the resourceful and experienced mind. As we discover that homelessness is seldom about laziness, we watch him latch on to the designs of Troy and Eric and become a true leader and force to reckon with. Life however, being as it is, riddles him with setbacks and obstacles, mostly from within. LEAD, RECURRING.
